What a Slide Gate Weighs
Nobody weighs a gate before ordering the machine that has to move it, which is why so many units end up working at the top of their rating. Adding It Up
Top and bottom rail, the uprights, the infill, the diagonal bracing, then the hardware. Steel tubing is quoted in pounds per foot by section size, so the frame is arithmetic rather than opinion. Infill is where the surprises live, since a sheet of solid metal cladding can weigh more than everything else combined.
The Tail Counts
On a cantilever the counterbalance tail is real steel and it moves with the rest of the leaf. A thirty foot frame for a twenty foot opening is half as heavy again as the opening suggests, and the operator accelerates all of it. Sizing from the clear opening alone is the most common way this goes wrong.
Wind Load Is Weight the Motor Feels
A solid infill turns the leaf into a sail. A gust across the drive adds a load through the roller assemblies and into the frame that behaves like extra mass to the drive and like a side load to the guides. Picket or louvre infill halves the effect and is worth considering on an exposed site near the coast.
Water and Mud
The bottom rail of a slide picks up mud from the track, and a sealed box section that fills with water carries it around all day. Drainage holes at the low point of every closed section are drilled at fabrication, and they are also what stops rust starting from the inside.
Why It Matters at Quote Stage
The weight sets the operator class, the roller rating, the post size and the depth of the concrete footing. Get it wrong and every correction is expensive. Working it out takes twenty minutes with a section table, and it is the number the rest of the project depends on.
