Safety Edges on a Sliding Leaf

A pressure sensitive strip along the leading edge is the last defence once every other sensor has missed something, and on sliding gates it guards a shearing action that a swing gate never has. The device notes at Pearland Sliding Gates Freesizer treat that strip as standard rather than as an upgrade, which is also how a Pearland inspector reads it.

Why Sliding Is Different

A swing leaf pushes an obstruction away from itself. A sliding leaf carries anything in its path toward the gate post and traps it there, and the same happens at the trailing end as the leaf passes the receiver post. Both ends need protection, which is the half most often missed.

How the Strip Works

A rubber extrusion with two conductors inside it, held apart until something presses the profile. Contact closes the circuit and the operator reverses. Some are wired, some use a transmitter on the leaf and a receiver at the cabinet, and the wireless versions carry a battery that belongs on the maintenance list.

Monitored Against Unmonitored

A monitored safety edge is tested by the control board on every cycle, so a cut cable or a flat battery stops the gate rather than quietly removing the protection. An unmonitored edge that failed last winter looks identical to one that works, right up to the moment it is needed. The extra cost is small and it separates a safety device from an ornament.

Mounting and the Gulf Climate

Aluminum carrier rail bonded to the leading edge, with the rubber pushed into it so it can be renewed without touching the gate. Ultraviolet light hardens rubber over several years, and a hardened profile needs more force before it triggers. Squeeze the edge by hand at each service and compare it against a new offcut kept for the purpose.

What It Does Not Replace

The edge acts after contact. A photo eye across the opening acts before it, and a loop detector acts before that. Layering them is the design, and each one covers the failure mode of the device beside it. A gate relying on a single sensor is one flat battery away from having none.
