Stiffness and Density

Steel is about three times stiffer than aluminum and about three times heavier, so a section of equal stiffness weighs roughly the same in either material. Corrosion in Practice

Aluminum forms its own oxide and then stops. Steel does not, so it depends entirely on its coating, and every drilled hole, cut end and scratch is where rust starts. Welding and Repair

Steel is welded by any fabricator with a stick machine, in the field, in the rain, by somebody who learned it twenty years ago. Aluminum needs a different process, cleaner preparation and more skill, and its heat affected zone loses strength in a way steel does not. That gap matters most on the day something is bent by a delivery truck.

What the Operator Sees

A lighter leaf accelerates faster, stops sooner, and puts less into the roller assemblies, the post and its footing. On a long cantilever run the saving compounds, because the tail is part of the mass being carried. It also lowers the force setting needed, which makes every safety device more effective.

Choosing

Steel for an ornamental leaf where the look is the point and the span is short. Aluminum for a long cantilever, for a solar site where the operator works from a battery, or for an owner who never wants to think about a finish again. Neither is wrong; picking the material before the span is known usually is.
