Track Profiles and Wheel Shapes
V groove, flat plate and recessed channel are the three running surfaces used under a track slide, and each one demands a wheel cut to match it. V Groove
An inverted V rail with a grooved wheel sitting over it. Contact is a line rather than a face, so the wheel self centres and the leaf runs straight without much help from above. Debris rolls off the peak instead of collecting, which is the reason this profile survives outdoors better than the alternatives.
Flat Plate
A flat bar bedded into or bolted onto the concrete, with a cylindrical wheel running along it. Cheap, easy to lay over a long run, and forgiving of small errors in level. It offers no self centring at all, so the guide roller at the top of the post does real work and any lateral load goes straight into that post.
Recessed Channel
A U section set into the driveway with the wheel running inside it. Neat to look at, level with the surface, and the worst of the three for debris: everything the drive washes down ends up in the channel and stays there. It is chosen for appearance, and it should be chosen knowingly.
Matching the Wheel
A grooved wheel on flat plate rides on two thin edges and wears into a saddle. A flat wheel in a V rail touches at one point and hammers itself into a taper. Mismatched pairs are common on gates repaired by somebody working from whatever was on the van, and the symptom is rapid uneven wear with no obvious cause.
Which One Suits a Clay Site
Ground that lifts and settles through the year moves a rail out of line, and a V profile tolerates some of that. A channel does not: once the two sides stop being parallel the wheel binds. Where the slope of the drive already sends water at the gate, a V rail with a scraper on the leading edge asks least of the owner and keeps the operator load steady.
