Sizing the Counterbalance Tail

Where the Ratio Comes From

A cantilever gate is a beam held at two points near one end. The two roller assemblies sit on the support post and the tail behind them acts as the counterweight. Shorten that tail and the leverage at the leading edge climbs sharply, so the frame deflects, the wheels load unevenly, and the nose of the leaf drops toward the driveway.

The Numbers in Practice

A twenty foot opening wants ten feet of tail, so the frame is thirty feet long and the run of clear ground beside the drive has to accept all of it. On a narrow lot that is the constraint deciding between a slide and a swing, and it is worth measuring before any steel is ordered.

What Happens With a Short Tail

The gate will still open. What changes is the rate of wear: the roller nearest the opening carries a load it was not rated for, the post it is bolted to takes a bending moment the concrete footing was never sized for, and the frame develops a permanent sag that no adjustment removes. All of that shows up in the second or third year rather than at handover.

Ground Conditions Change the Post, Not the Ratio

Pearland sits on clay that swells and shrinks with the season, so a footing under a cantilever post goes deeper than it looks necessary and often wider at its base. The tail ratio is geometry and does not move with soil type. The footing is what absorbs local ground behaviour, and the two decisions are made separately.

Checking an Existing Gate

Measure from the leading edge to the first roller and compare that with the clear opening. Anything under a third is worth watching. Sight along the top rail with the gate closed and look for a droop at the nose, then look at the running surface of both wheels for flat spots. Those two checks take five minutes and they say whether the geometry was right at build.
