A cantilever slide carries no weight at the opening at all: the leaf extends past its support and hangs from two roller assemblies mounted on posts to one side, with a counterbalance tail behind them.
Cost Falls Where the Load Goes
Track is cheaper in materials and simpler to install because the ground takes the load directly. Cantilever puts the entire weight of the leaf, plus the leverage of the overhang, into two posts and their footings, which means substantially more concrete and heavier steel. Ground Movement Affects Them Differently
A cantilever gate is tolerant of the driveway moving, because nothing it touches is at the opening. A track gate is not: seasonal movement in reactive ground lifts sections of rail out of line, and a rail that is no longer straight is a gate that binds. In soil that changes volume through the year this asymmetry matters more than the initial price difference.
Making the Choice

Drainage Is the Permanent Fix
If the rail fills repeatedly, the real problem is that the driveway is delivering water to it. It is a groundworks cost, and on a driveway with a long fall toward the entrance it pays for itself in avoided hardware.
When the Rail Itself Is Done
Rails wear out. A section that has been scored deeply, or that has been lifted out of line by ground movement, will keep destroying wheels no matter how well it is swept. Replacing a length of rail is ordinary work and considerably cheaper than the pattern of repeated wheel replacements that people usually try first.

The first question about a sliding gate is not which type or what it costs. It is whether the space exists. A track gate needs a clear run at least as long as the opening, plus a little for the end stop. A cantilever needs meaningfully more, because the counterbalance tail extends behind the support posts even when the gate is closed. The rule of thumb is around one and a half times the opening width in total, and the extra is exactly the part people forget to measure.
Obstructions Above and Below
The run has to be clear at the height of the leaf, not just at ground level. A tree with low branches, a utility box, an air conditioning unit, a mailbox, a stack of stored material that has been there so long it reads as permanent. Any of these occupies the space the gate needs. Below ground matters too on a cantilever, because the support posts need deep footings and cannot land on a buried service.
Level Along the Run
The ground the gate retracts over does not carry any weight on a cantilever, but on a track design the rail must be straight and at a consistent level for the whole travel. Where the fence line is shared, it is worth confirming the position of the boundary properly rather than assuming the fence marks it. If the Run Is Not There
