Guide Rollers and Post Alignment

Everything above the running gear exists to stop the leaf falling over sideways, and it is quietly the most misadjusted part of a track slide. What the Guides Do

A pair of vertical rollers grip the top rail of the leaf, mounted on a post beside the track, holding the gate upright while the wheels below carry the weight. They should touch without squeezing. Pinched guides drag, add load to the operator and wear a groove in the rail, while loose guides let the leaf lean so the wheels run on one edge.

Setting the Gap

Slide a business card between each roller and the rail with the gate at rest. It should pass with slight resistance on both sides. Push the gate through its full travel by hand and repeat at three positions, because a rail that is not perfectly straight pinches at one point and gapes at another, which is an alignment problem in the rail rather than in the bracket.

The Post Is the Real Variable

Guide posts are usually set last, in a smaller footing, and they are the first thing clay movement rotates. A post leaning half a degree changes the gap by more than the adjustment range of the bracket allows. Where a setting will not hold from one season to the next, the fix is under the ground.

Bearing Type

Sealed ball bearing guides run quietly and seize when the seal gives up. Nylon guides run slightly noisier, tolerate grit, and wear away gradually instead of failing suddenly. Near the coast the polymer option is often the longer lived choice even though the specification reads cheaper.

What Misadjustment Sounds Like

A steady rubbing that changes pitch with speed is a pinched guide. A knock at one point in the travel is a flat spot below, or a joint in the rail. A groan at the start of travel that stops once the leaf is moving is friction in the guides rather than a tired motor, and swapping the operator will not quieten it.
