Why It Fills Up

A rail set across a driveway sits at the lowest point of everything that drains toward it. Silt washed off the drive, grit, seed pods, and after a heavy storm a surprising quantity of fine sediment. None of it is heavy, and compacted into a channel it is enough to lift a wheel off its running surface.

What Debris Does to the Hardware

A wheel that rides over compacted grit is briefly carrying its load on a point instead of a surface, which flattens the wheel over time and scores the rail. Once the rail is scored the wheel wears faster, and the cycle accelerates. The first symptom is a rhythmic noise at the same place in the travel, and it is worth acting on at that stage rather than when the gate starts to bind.

Details That Help at Build Time

An open profile rail that debris can pass through, rather than a closed channel that traps it. A slight crown on the driveway so water crosses the line rather than pooling at it. A brush or scraper on the leading edge of the leaf that sweeps the rail on every cycle. Each is inexpensive during installation and difficult to retrofit, which is why they are worth specifying rather than hoping for.

The Routine

A stiff broom along the rail once a month, and a hose through it after any heavy storm. Where silt has already compacted, a narrow scraper works better than a brush. It takes minutes and it is the whole of slide gate maintenance on the track side, which is a fair trade for the money the design saves at build.

Drainage Is the Permanent Fix

If the rail fills repeatedly, the real problem is that the driveway is delivering water to it. A channel drain across the drive on the road side of the gate intercepts the flow and takes the sediment with it, and cleaning a drain is a far easier job than clearing a gate rail. It is a groundworks cost, and on a driveway with a long fall toward the entrance it pays for itself in avoided hardware.

When the Rail Itself Is Done

Rails wear out. A section that has been scored deeply, or that has been lifted out of line by ground movement, will keep destroying wheels no matter how well it is swept. Replacing a length of rail is ordinary work and considerably cheaper than the pattern of repeated wheel replacements that people usually try first.
