Cantilever Against Track
How Each One Works
A track slide sits on wheels running in or on a rail fixed to the driveway, with guide rollers at the top keeping it upright. The rail carries the weight along the whole travel. A cantilever slide carries no weight at the opening at all: the leaf extends past its support and hangs from two roller assemblies mounted on posts to one side, with a counterbalance tail behind them.
Cost Falls Where the Load Goes
Track is cheaper in materials and simpler to install because the ground takes the load directly. Cantilever puts the entire weight of the leaf, plus the leverage of the overhang, into two posts and their footings, which means substantially more concrete and heavier steel. The gate itself also has to be stiffer, because it is a beam spanning the opening unsupported.
The Rail Is the Real Difference
A track across the entrance collects everything that washes down a driveway. Grit, leaves, silt after heavy rain. A wheel riding over compacted debris climbs, wears, and eventually derails or binds, and the maintenance is a genuine ongoing chore rather than an occasional one. Where the driveway drains across the gate line, this is the deciding factor and it points at cantilever.
Where Track Still Wins
On a very wide opening, cantilever hardware and footings scale expensively, and a track design becomes the pragmatic answer. It is also the better option where there is not enough room behind the posts for a counterbalance tail, since a cantilever needs its overhang length available on the retraction side and a track gate needs only the opening width.
Ground Movement Affects Them Differently
A cantilever gate is tolerant of the driveway moving, because nothing it touches is at the opening. A track gate is not: seasonal movement in reactive ground lifts sections of rail out of line, and a rail that is no longer straight is a gate that binds. In soil that changes volume through the year this asymmetry matters more than the initial price difference.
Making the Choice
In practice the sequence is: check there is a retraction run at all, then check whether the driveway drains across the gate line, then check whether the ground moves. Two of those three pointing at cantilever settles it, and the higher build cost buys a gate that needs almost nothing done to it.
